Edifier MR4

Edifier MR4 Review

Welcome to my review of the Edifier MR4 Studio Monitor Speakers. Of course, these are made by Edifier and pack quite a few inputs for the price you pay. The MR4 originally released in

Little Boxes, Punchy Sounds

So how will the Edifier MR4 Studio Monitor Speakers perform in my setup? Continue reading to find out. You can also read our other reviews here.

The Hardware

In the box, you will receive both of the speakers (obviously!), a 3.5mm RCA cable, an RCA cable, and a small user manual. They are very well packaged and are definitely going to arrive on your doorstep in perfect condition, even if your friendly reliable local couriers get ahold of them. We all know which one I am talking about but I won’t name and shame in a review, this time.

Unfortunately, there is no remote control with the MR4 like the R1280DB. However, these are made for music creators and not for say a TV setup at home. They perform very well when it comes to music, and they also sound fantastic with video games.

Anyway, the speakers are very well made, with a solid wooden feel as well as a clean-looking matte finish. The chosen wood for these speakers is MDF, this helps to minimise acoustic resonance as well as keep the price point as low as possible. One thing I will say is at the price point you pay (~£110 at the time of writing) they are actually very good speakers. They’re not quite as good as the Edifier R1280DB that I recently reviewed, but, they are cheaper.

Design and Functionality

I do love the design of the Edifier MR4. The matte black finish looks nice which also helps the speaker cones themselves blend in. There are two colour options for the MR4, mine is black, and the other is a nice white finish. In total, the speakers have an output of 42W RMS between them.

The Edifier MR4 features a “Dual Sound Mode Effect”. This means on one setting you are listening to the true sound you should hear, perfect for artists recording their latest hit songs. The other mode is music mode which is meant for daily listening to music. In my case, this would be daily listening to video games. Both modes actually sounded the same to me, but, this could be because I’m not a true audiophile. It could also be that I don’t have access to any “Hi Fi” subscription service and I also don’t make my own music.

Connection and Software

At the back of the right (active) speaker, there is a connection for the left (passive) speaker. There are a handful of connections on the right speaker that will allow a couple of different inputs into your speakers. On the back, we have an RCA plug and also TRS which are analog connections. Up front, there is an Aux port and a headphone port. For those of you interested to know, if you plug an RCA cable into say one of your two PC monitors and then plug an aux cable into the other, they both output audio at the same time. Good for if you have say a PS5 on one screen and a PC outputting to the other with some YouTube or something.

As these are studio monitor speakers, there is no need for an app. Everything you need quick access to is on the front of the speakers. Of course, should you wish to adjust the treble or bass, there are some adjustable knobs on the rear. There is also a volume adjuster on the front.

Conclusions

The Edifier MR4 Studio Monitor Speakers are absolutely brilliant. They provide a very nice, clean-sounding, and fairly punchy audio experience. If you wish to read more about these speakers you can visit the official Edifier website for more information. Let’s just say, you will not be disappointed with the purchase of these. Regardless of what you want them for, they will not let you down.

I give the Edifier MR4 a well-deserved score of 10/10.
