Welcome to my review of Berserk Boy on the PC. This game is available now on PC (Steam), and Nintendo Switch. It is brought to us by indie studio BerserkBoy Games which is a very fitting name for the studio!
Berserk Boy is kind of like a long-lost love child to the platformers of yesteryear such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man. In fact, the game has music by Tee Lopes, who is known for creating music for Sonic Mania and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.
I will say that Berserk Boy has a lot of flashing light effects due to the nature of the game. So please take heed if flashing lights affect you.
The Game
We play as the Berserk Boy himself known as Kei. It is up to Kei to stop the diabolical Dr. Genos and his army of Dark Energy minions from taking over the world. Kei gets turned into Berserk Boy thanks to energy orbs. These orbs give Kei the power to use different forms which use Fire, Ice, Lightning, Earth, and Air abilities. A bit like the weather the last few days in the UK then!
You will need to get used to the controls quite quickly so you can chain up combos to fill your berserk meter. The berserk meter allows you to use some very devastating special attacks that can bring enemies to their knees, fast. To be honest, the control scheme is very comfortable in Berserk Boy so it won’t take too much to learn the buttons.
As you clear the missions of the game, you can upgrade your abilities and health. You will also be ranked at the end of each mission. So do your best in each mission!
Hidden around each mission are medals as well as resistance soldiers for you to find. Keep your eyes peeled for ways that you may not think of going.
One thing I will say is this game can be very hectic and at some points quite difficult. But that’s just me as I suck at 2D platformers. However, it did not stop me from enjoying the game one bit. It’s great fun.
We Love Retro Graphics!
Berserk Boy has that beautiful retro 2D graphic style that I love. It throws me right back to my earlier days of gaming on platforms such as the SEGA Mega Drive.
It also has a brilliant soundtrack and sound effects to match. It’s an absolute pleasure to play this game not only on my PC but also on my Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go.
The game is quite short and it’ll take you around 4-5 hours to finish. But that’s fine, it’s less than twenty pounds, so I am not complaining. However, the game does have 21 achievements on Steam to unlock. So they’ll keep you busy.
Besides, some games that are ridiculously long can get boring for me. I am much more into the shorter games these days.
Conclusions
To finish up my review, Berserk Boy is great fun and I highly recommend that you give it a play if you get a chance. Should you wish to purchase the game, you can get the game on the Steam Store. It is being sold for a very generous price of £15.99.
There’s also a Demo that you can check out to see if you enjoy it. I bet you will.
I give Berserk Boy a score of 9/10.
