SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Mini Review

Welcome to my review of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake for the PC. This game is developed by Purple Lamp Studios and is published by THQ Nordic.

It was released on 31st January 2023 on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

It’s a platform adventure game with some fighting elements. Because this is made to be a family friendly game, the fighting doesn’t come across in a violent manner, such as no blood or gore.

The Game

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is set in the land of Bikini Bottom and see’s our favourite characters from the hit TV show set on another whirlwind adventure to save their home.

Throughout the game, we control SpongeBob and he has his best buddy Patrick with him all the way… As a balloon! We also unlock more costumes as we travel through different lands. There are more than 30 to collect.

SpongeBob has gotten his hands on some wish-granting Mermaid’s Tears… which ends up with SpongeBob opening up some Wishworlds to new lands full of pirates, cowboys, knights, and the evil jellies that are trying to take over Bikini Bottom and the Wishworlds.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake

As players progress through the game, they will unlock new skills for SpongeBob. Some of these are skills such as gliding, karate kick, fishhook swing, and more. The gliding skill is very useful, but the karate kick is even better as this allows SpongeBob to traverse rapidly across large gaps he would otherwise be unable to jump across.

The controls of the game are very simple and only require a few buttons and the left and right sticks. I quite like this because smaller hands may not be able to reach the trigger buttons properly which I have experienced with family of my own.

The levels have been carefully recreated and I must say they’re great fun to travel around. The graphics in the game are absolutely fabulous and so are the sound effects. I played this mostly on my Steam Deck and it ran very well.

I found myself smirking like an idiot whilst playing this game due to some of the humour. Plus, it’s SpongeBob. What’s not to like about our little yellow friend?

Conclusions

All in all, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is quite an entertaining game. Especially for the younger audience. I had great fun playing it. It ran very well on the Steam Deck which naturally meant it run like a dream on my RTX 3070 at 4K. It looks bloody good too!

If you want to dip your toes into The Cosmic Shake you can purchase it on the official Steam page.

I give SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake a score of 8/10.
