Welcome to my review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge! this game was released on to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on June 16th 2022. Of course, it is based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that many of us love.
It’s brought to use by developers Tribute Games (Flinthook, Wizorb) and is published by publishers Limited Run Games (Tetris Connected), DotEmu (Streets of Rage 4), and Gamera Games (Mercury Abbey).
Heroes In A Half Shell!
This game is literally blowing up on the Internet at the moment, and it’s understandable why. Keep reading to find out my thoughts on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge! You can also check out our previous reviews.
The Game
Shredder is at it again in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. The Turtles must save New York City from Shredder and his clan. They’re all here too. You can play as Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael. We also have a few more playable characters, these include Master Splinter, April O’Neil, and the unlockable Casey Jones.
Story mode will see you fighting your way through Shredder’s clan of bad guys. Of course, we have the Foot Clan and its soldiers. Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady are here too, as well as the main man himself, Shredder.
The game is a side-scrolling beat ’em up with pixelated graphics, but it’s very enjoyable. The game isn’t too difficult but it does give you the option of three difficulties, easy, medium, and hard. Easy is, well, easy. Medium isn’t too bad. Hard, of course, is quite hard. But still not too hard that it’s not enjoyable. There is a variety of different moves for you to master. There are the basic attacks, as well as a super attack. You also have a choice of various grab attacks. My favourite is the Fling Toss which results in your character literally throwing the enemy towards you and out of view.
Each episode in story mode has three different challenges for you to attempt. For example, in episode one, you’re challenged to finish the level without taking any damage. Sounds easy, right? It’s not. Episode 6 challenges you with completing this level without using super attacks. You get the idea. It adds that extra layer of fun to the game though. Each episode also has collectables for you to pick up along the way.
There is an arcade mode, this is kind of an quick mode that gives you a set amount of lives and continues. It’s the same levels as story mode but minus the map to travel on, no challenges, and no collectables. You can also play the game with up to five friends locally or online. Yes, six players on this one screen. Carnage!
Look & Sound
So as mentioned above this is a side-scrolling game with pixelated graphics. But my god it looks good. Even on a 4K screen this game just pops, everything is sharp and super colourful. It all just looks incredible. It’s not always about having top-tier 3D graphics to make a game stand out, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge totally seals that deal.
Of course, the game runs perfectly on the Xbox Series X. I’ve also tried this out on the PC via Game Pass and again, it runs like a dream. But then it should, because there’s nothing dramatic going on such as an intense 3D ray-traced scene with bullets and debris flying everywhere. Here’s to you Bright Memory: Infinite. That’s also a fun game by the way.
The soundtrack to the game is amazing, it’s literally a complete throwback to the cartoon from when I was a kid. It’s so nostalgic and I love it. The sound effects are super clean and also sound great.
Length & Replayability
The main story mode won’t last too long, I reckon around three hours at most. But don’t worry, as there are seven different endings to story mode. So that’s seven times three. I’ll let you do the math on that one.
That’s not all we have, there’s also an arcade mode in the game which will see you through a good chunk of your lifetime. The game also has 30 achievements totalling 1000 Gamerscore.
Conclusions
This game is fantastic. I highly recommend you check it out on the Xbox Game Pass site. It’s been developed really well, I did not experience any issues whilst playing, and progress continues across from Xbox to PC should you be fortunate enough to have that.
I score Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge a top score of 10/10.
