Welcome to my review of the latest piece of hardware I was kindly sent for review. Today I bring you my thoughts of the Edifier MG300 Computer Tabletop Bluetooth Speaker.
This is probably going to be a shorter review as the hardware doesn’t have too much to write about, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. So, keep on reading to find out more. When you’re done here, you can check out our previous hardware reviews if you wish to do so.
The Hardware
I will get this off with the negatives, as there isn’t very many really. First of all, I think the addition of a 3.5mm input would finish this speaker off nicely for the inputs. Second, I really wish it had a little more bass. The speakers felt quite empty and dull when playing games that would have a bit of bass to them. For example, let’s say PUBG. I like to hear the thump of each gunshot, unfortunately the MG300 didn’t quite hit that.
But we’re talking about a speaker that costs around £60 at the time of writing, and it’s powered by a single USB cable. Not only that, that exact USB cable can also send audio from your PC when plugged into a USB port on your desktop or laptop.
To top off the inputs, we have Bluetooth 5.3 with up to 30 metre range. Not bad. Connection to your smartphone is simple and you can also have calls through it thanks to the built in microphone which is up on top of the device.
The Edifier MG300 has 52mm drivers that do perform rather well considering the aforementioned lack of bass. I could clearly hear vocals on YouTube clips and the balance of the different types of sound coming out where very acceptable and did not feel uncomfortable to my ears.
It’s Good for £60!
In fact, I would actually go as far as this device is a pleasure to use. It would definitely suit someone who is limited on space for bigger speakers or even power sockets at their desk. It would also be perfect for someone who would usually wear a headset and just wants something for those downtime moments and to give their ears some freedom and cool off a bit.
On the top we have five buttons, one controls the RGB lighting – this will cycle through different modes and colours. We have volume up and down keys, and input key which switches from USB audio to Bluetooth audio, and finally a play/pause button for when playing music through Bluetooth mode.
The RGB lights that are around the device are not the brightest. But we’ve got to remember this device is being power by a single USB port. There’s a lot going on for one port to power and I must commend Edifier on the fantastic job they’ve done with that one port.
Conclusions
To conclude my review, this is actually a pretty good speaker for the price. At the time of writing, it costs around £60. It could do with a few tweaks like a 3.5mm input and maybe a little more bass. But overall, it’s pretty decent.
I score the Edifier MG300 an 8/10.
