Welcome to my review of the NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL. When it comes to keyboards, I’ve never really had the brand NZXT cross my mind… It’s usually the ones that have a huge marketing budget… You know the ones. Well for me it’s the likes of Razer and Corsair.
I was kindly sent a review sample of the white version of the NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL for review, and I must get it out now… It’s fantastic. You can also get this keyboard in black. I was also sent an NZXT Lift 2 Ergo mouse in white, the review for that is coming soon.
NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL Features
The Function 2 MiniTKL keyboard has a ton of features that make it stand out from other mechanical keyboards. Well, at least for me. In the box you get the keyboard, the data cable, a keycap puller, a switch puller, a product information guide, 4 x 35g replacement optical switches, and 4 x 45g replacement optical switches.
To begin with, it has optical switches. This is a first for me. I have never used optical switches on a mechanical keyboard until now. I will say, I probably won’t go back neither. They are so nice to type on, as well as very responsive for gaming. For example, I’ve been playing a lot of Delta Force on my PC with this keyboard. It just hits nice and quickly, first time, every time. So that ticks that box, it works great with shooting games.
Now whilst this is a wired keyboard, that’s not exactly a bad thing. I would like my desk to look a lot tidier, thus meaning I usually prefer wireless. However, the provided USB-C cable is pretty long, coming in at 2 metres. One of my favourite features is the wheel on the side, it’s in such a convenient place that I can easily turn my PC volume up or down without really having to stretch my fingers.
This keyboard also has hot swappable switches, if that interests you. Personally, it doesn’t really interest me unless of course one of the switches breaks then I can easily swap it out. However, the installed switches are rated with a 100 million keypress lifetime.
The keyboard also has the usual stuff like RGB, N-Key rollover, a standard bottom row and more such as doubleshot PBT caps meaning you can swap them out with ease for a custom set. You can configure it with the NZXT CAM software. It has many more features so here is a snippet from the NZXT page for this keyboard, credit goes to them for the text:
- NZXT Swift Optical Switches have a linear, lightweight feel with a 0.2 ms response time, 100-million key press guarantee, and 1 mm or 1.5 mm adjustable actuation.
- MiniTKL form factor packs every key of a traditional tenkeyless keyboard into the smallest footprint possible to maximize space.
- 8,000 Hz polling rate transmits input signals 8x faster than most gaming keyboards, ensuring lightning-fast responsiveness.
- Doubleshot PBT keycaps feature two layers of plastic to preserve legends and prevent fading over time.
- Dual-layer of sound-dampening foam and tape-enhanced PCB improve acoustics by absorbing unwanted pinging noises.
- Pre-lubricated switches and plate-mounted stabilizers guarantee smooth, quiet keystrokes.
- Easily swap switches with the keycap and switch puller tools, plus 4 x 35g and 4 x 45g switches for out-of-the-box experimentation.
- Top frame plate is crafted from 3mm-thick aerospace-grade aluminum for long-lasting stability and a sleek appearance.
- Left-hand side volume roller and other media controls enable quick and convenient in-game adjustments.
Basically, you get quite a lot in the RRP of £129.99! It also all feels of a very high quality, almost like you’ve paid way more than the RRP, in my humble opinion.
Thoughts
This is by far one of the best keyboards I have ever used. You can type so easily on it, just breezing over the keys and not making any mistakes because of the key placement feeling just right.
The RGB lighting is very easy to customise with thanks to the finely tuned NZXT CAM software. I remember using this years ago and it felt quite clunky. But thankfully, that is no longer an issue. The software sees all my connected NZXT hardware first time, every time.
I must also add that the lighting is very bright which is a plus… We do love some shiny RGB lighting!
You can easily adjust the brightness on the keyboard, or in the CAM software. You can also adjust stuff like the actuation point from 1mm to 1.5mm. This sounds very little, but it can be very noticeable especially if you’re fast at typing and are prone to catching other keys as you’re typing away.
As mentioned by NZXT above, the keyboard has an aluminium top plate which not only ensures good quality, but the weight of it is great. This means it doesn’t slide around my desk whilst I am playing games due to the weight and of course the rubber feet which help keep it in place.
I highly recommend in the future that you check out NZXT if you’re looking for a new keyboard. I cannot rate it enough!
Conclusion
To round up my review, I believe that the NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL really hits the sweet spot for me when it comes to keyboards. The feel of typing is very nice, the software is great, and the additional buttons such as the volume wheel are brilliant.
As mentioned, this was my first time using optical switches, and my god they are so good.
I rate the NZXT Function 2 MiniTKL a well deserved 10/10!
