Painting VR

Painting VR Review

Painting just got easier with Painting VR, a creative VR game brought to Steam and Meta Quest by dev Oisoi and publisher Cybernetic Walrus (Rise of Humanity). The game is available now for £14.99 on the Oculus Store or £18.99 on Steam.

Relax and Paint with Painting VR

So will I channel my inner Bob Ross, or will it leave me feeling as flat as a canvas? Keep reading to find out. You can also read our previous reviews.

The Game

Ok, so there isn’t a huge amount to say about this game. You are literally painting in VR. However, there is a ton of tools for players to use. You can turn a blank canvas into something you will want to adorn your walls. Such tools are markers, your fingers, paint rollers, brushes, a spray can, and more.

At present the game is single-player only, however, the developers have said they are looking to implement multiplayer at a later date. One cool feature is the game has an in-game browser. This allows you to listen to your favourite music, find creative inspiration, watch tutorials, and more.

You can set up your studio to best fit your needs, you can also save the studio for your future visits. Once you’ve created your masterpiece artworks you can also put these on the walls of your studio to show off your hard work.

One thing I did like was how you can pick your colours and then mix the paint colours to make another colour. Just like in real life. It’s really clever how it works especially if you use your fingers to make a mess as it feels natural.

Oisoi has done a fantastic job with Painting VR especially when it comes to the haptics on the touch controllers. You literally feel every stroke in your hand. Giggity.

Look & Sound

The graphics are surprisingly good, and I mean that. Take a look at the studio below. It’s beautiful.

The audio in the game is very relaxing, each scratch, stroke, or finger swipe on your works of art sound so realistic. As mentioned you can also whack on your own songs in the in-game browser. Thrash out some heavy metal or slap on some James Blunt to sing along to whilst covering your canvas in your colourful goo. The choice is yours.

Length & Replayability

Of course, there is no real objective here with this game. But we knew that before we even got started. You can spend as long or as little inside of this game as you like. I found the comfort levels of Painting VR were very comfortable and I more than likely could play this game until either I got bored or my Quest 2 battery died.

Conclusions

Painting VR is a surprisingly relaxing game for VR players. Jump in and have some fun, or get serious and paint a new masterpiece. The choice is yours, and as mentioned your only objectives are to relax and get creative. I give Painting VR a score of 9/10.
