Welcome to my review of Remnant II. This game is brought to us by developers Gunfire Games (Chronos: Before the Ashes, Darksiders III) and publishers Gearbox Publishing (Trover Saves the Universe, We Happy Few).
It was released on 25th July 2023 onto the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. For the purpose of this review, I was kindly provided with a key for the PC version.
Time To Smash The Root!
So, Remnant II. What is it? It’s an action RPG game that is a direct sequel to best seller, Remnant: From the Ashes. If you’ve not played the first, I highly suggest you do, it’s a great game.

The Game
With all games in genre (sort of), we choose our Archetype that we shall use throughout our tough journey through the world of the game. An Archetype is basically a class, so our starter skills would be entailed to the type of character you choose. For example, if you choose The Handler, you’ll get a pet doggo that will help you in fights. Hell, it even has a one time use (until you die and respawn) ability where the little blighter will run to you and revive you if you’re downed. Very, very useful.
We also have a hub world named Ward 13. This is where we can buy items, mods, and more. We can also upgrade our weapons and abilities here. But the main game is where we get stuck right in, we travel to the main game worlds to start taking down The Root.
The Root are a race of evil plant species that will do anything it takes to destroy the multiverse. Of course, our main quest is to burn them all to the ground via the use of many different weapons and abilities in the game.
The gameplay is very fun, the actual gunplay is great and feels quite easy to handle, and melee combat can be quite brutal and straight to the point.
Look & Sound
Ok, for me, this is where the game shines. It looks absolutely f**king incredible. The graphics are truly gorgeous and they blew me away from the moment I jumped into the game.
The sounds in-game are also pretty damn good. You can hear all sorts of different sounds going on whilst traversing the world. I highly recommend you play this game with ear buds or a headset on to get the best out of the audio experience.
Conclusions
To round it up, Remnant II is fun as hell. It can be hard at times, but that adds to the enjoyment of the game for me. It makes it a challenge. I find some games where it’s run and gun to get quite boring so I enjoy the challenging element.
One thing I will say is that it’s marked as “unsupported” on the Steam Deck. However I did find it worked quite well after a couple of game updates and also some tweaks to the in-game graphics settings as well as some of the TDP changes on the Deck,
I give Remnant II an 8/10.
